Abbott's biographies are more than just the story of one person's life. He also weaves in the context and the antecedents, so one comes away with a much fuller understanding of the place of this person in history. He also interjects his own "therefore what" commentary. The ending of this book, Abbott's concluding commentary on Hannibal, was moving and poignant:"War and commerce are the two great antagonistic principles which struggle for the mastery of the human race, the function of the one being to preserve, and that of the other to destroy. ...
"When Hannibal appeared upon the stage, he found his country engaged peacefully and prosperously in exchanging the productions of the various countries of the then known world, and promoting every where the comfort and happiness of mankind. He contrived to turn all these energies into the new current of military aggression, conquest, and war. ... He gained most splendid victories, devastated many lands, embarrassed and stopped the commercial intercourse which was carrying the comfort of life to so many thousand homes, and spread, instead of them, every where, privation, want, terror, with pestilence and famine in their train. ... In a word, he was one of the greatest military heroes that the world has every known."
My only quibble with the Kindle edition is that it doesn't contain the maps referred to in the text.

Interesting book about Hannibal's life during after the Punic wars. The book is an 'easy reader' and doesn't go too much into details, but a good overview of history. Although I enjoyed the book, the reason for giving it 3 stars is that the illustrations and maps are missing in the version. Maps are a must, to understand where cities and countries were during that time, in particular since names have changed in history.
This was a great book I learned a lot about Carthage that I had never known from previous readings
This is the fourth book I have read in the Maker's of History. I have not been disappointed with content My only problem is that the maps do not show up on my Fire HD.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It flows along quite well. Informative.
To really appreciate how extraordinary a general Scipio Africanus was, it helps to know the superb qualities and deeds of his very worthy opponent. The rudiments of Hannibal's story are well known - who doesn't know at least a bit about the guy who crossed the Alps with his elephants? Jacob Abbott gives us the story - well-told, in fine prose, and not weighed down with too much detail - of Hannibal's amazing life.
This is a factual presentation of events as viewed through the perspective of the time in which it was written. That is good a bad. There is no "[politically correct" filtering. But there is rather bias comment which is insightful to the racial and political bias of the time of writing. Still a good factual presentation a quick read. Worth the effort.
A rather simple and general review of Hannibal and his wars with Rome. Nothing spectacular or detailed about Hannibal and the second Punic war with Rome. The only good thing is the book was free but the story line was a basic review of Hannibal leaves Spain, traverses the Alps and spends 14 years in Italy fighting and, in most cases, defeating the Roman Armies before returning to Cathage by ship. No detailed discussion of the Alps adventures or the battles, more a general overview of his life, but it was free. I suggest Ben Kane's historical novel "Hannibal" for a more fun read.
